S.A.'s first Queen Anchovy spoke in favor of NDO last August
QSanAntonio, March 14, 2014

Last August 21, Jody Bailey Newman, who with her husband Steve Newman owns the Friendly Spot Ice House and other businesses, stood on the steps of City Hall with members of CAUSA, and spoke on behalf of the then-proposed nondiscrimination ordinance which would go before the City Council in September.

Queen Anchovy I Jody Bailey Newman and King Anchovy XLIX Steve Newman.

This week, Fiesta Cornyation officials announced that Jody was selected to be the first-ever Queen Anchovy I and Steve was chosen King Anchovy XLIX. The two will reign over the Court of Festive Fetes and Frivolous Faux Pas.

Activists in the LGBT community became acquainted with Jody last summer when she spoke as a business owner on behalf of the nondiscrimination ordinance. Her comments were widely published in local media.

“Eliminating the possibility of discrimination empowers all employees to focus on their work, their families and their communities,” she said at the time.

Responding to former City Councilwoman Elisa Chan's secretly recorded statement that gays are "so disgusting," Jody commented: “I’m not a legal expert but I just don’t think it makes you a good person to say something like that, it doesn’t matter if you’re legally able to say it […] it does not make her a good steward of the community.”

In a conversation with QSanAntonio last February, Jody said that when officials from Cornyation approached Steve about being King Anchovy for this year's Fiesta, she was asked to be the first-ever Queen Anchovy in part because of her activism on behalf of the ordinance.

Jody was in the first class of ambassadors for SA2020, a nonprofit whose aim is to grow a shared vision for the future of San Antonio. Jody's cause is downtown development. "I love urban neighborhoods, walkability, bike friendly streets and want many small locally owned businesses to serve those urban dwellers."

Those who know the Newmans will tell you that they're a team -- crowning Jody as the first Queen Anchovy was a natural fit with Steve as King.

Aside from the Friendly Spot the couple also owns the Alamo Street Bar and are co-owners of the Tuk Tuk Tap Room with chef David Gilbert. They have also partnered with Jason and Jake Dady to bring Texas BBQ, craft beer and wine to Southtown with the re-opening of the B&D Ice House on the corner of Cedar and South Alamo.

In 2012 Steve and Jody launched the Newman Project, a company that focuses on beer, how it gets delivered, what it pairs with and where you can buy it. Steve is Micromatic Certified brewer and has designed and built the most state of the art tap systems in South Texas.

The Newmans live in Southtown and have two children.

Since becoming a non-profit organization, Fiesta Cornyation has donated over $1.5M to local charities. Last year's beneficiaries include the San Antonio AIDS Foundation, BEAT AIDS and Hope, Action, Care. This year's performances are on April 22 - 24 at the Charlene McCombs Empire Theater.
