Fiesta Frenzy to benefit theater arts students
QSanAntonio, April 17, 2014

Organizers of the 15th Annual Fiesta Frenzy announced that the beneficiary of this year's show will be the Woodlawn Academy for the Performing Arts At-Risk Scholarship Fund. The show, billed as "the most popular unofficial Fiesta event," will be held on Wednesday, April 23 at the Woodlawn Theater.

"The Woodlawn Theatre partners with the San Antonio Independent School District to help at-risk students, particularly in the Deco District, attend theatre classes during the school year," says Greg Hinojosa, who with his partner, Daniel Acosta, originated Fiesta Frenzy.

"Promoting theatre arts helps enrich and enlighten students, encouraging them to thrive in school. Our program has the support of City Councilman Diego Bernal, who will be our special guest at the show," says Hinojosa.

Fiesta Frenzy will be hosted by the "dynamic duo" of Eryca Daniels and Autumn Summers. The extravaganza will consist of performances by some of the most talented female illusionists from around the country including Layla LaRue, Amber Nixx, Lady Tiffany, Kourtney Devereaux, Amunique Andrews, Donet McKim, Odyssey Whitney, Rita Andrews and Jessica Marxx.

The audience also will be treated to special performances by the casts of the musicals "Catch Me If You Can" and "Thoroughly Modern Millie," and a guest appearance by the Las Monas puppet group.

The theme for this year's show is La Quincianera. "Be sure to dress in your favorite quinceanera attire and enter the costume contest for your chance to win a season pass to the Woodlawn Theatre," urges Hinojosa.

The original Fiesta Frenzy began in 1999 as a cabaret night to raise funds for a fledgling effort at creating the first San Antonio LGBT Community Center. For the first three years the show was held at the Rivercenter Comedy Club.

After the original community center folded, Hinojosa and Acosta continued the benefit every year to help different non-profits within the community. Past Fiesta Frenzy beneficiaries include We Are Alive, BEAT AIDS, the San Antonio AIDS Foundation, the Josephine Theater, ChildSafe of SanAntonio and the Gay and Lesbian Association at San Antonio College.

According to Hinojosa, Fiesta Frenzy has raised over $100,000 for local charities.
