Equality Texas hires Robert Salcido as San Antonio field organizer

Equality Texas executive director Chuck Smith confirmed on August 5 that the organization had hired a field organizer who will be based in San Antonio.

The new appointee, Robert Salcido Jr., is the first Equality Texas field organizer to be based in the Alamo City. He will assume assume all day-to-day responsibilities for the San Antonio area.

For the time being, Salcido will share space at Pride Center San Antonio's offices in the Monte Vista neighborhood.

Salcido is a well-known in the San Antonio activist community. He serves on the San Antonio LGBT Chamber of Commerce board of directors as vice president. He also is on the executive board of of the Pride Center and a founding member and vice president of Orgullo de San Antonio LULAC Council 22198.

Salcido's background includes a 15-year career in insurance marketing and sales. He is a also a Herbalife wellness coach.

In an announcement describing his responsibilities, Salcido said, "In my role I'll be working closely with my Equality Texas colleagues throughout the state, advancing issues of equality and fairness. I also will begin developing public education initiatives to help strengthen and bring awareness to issues of discrimination and how our existing nondiscrimination ordinance works for all residents of San Antonio."

Salcido will also be working with members of CAUSA (Community Alliance for a United San Antonio). "Being familiar with the leadership of this coalition, I'm excited to continue to work with you all in this new role," he said.

In an effort to expand the his reach into the community, Salcido says he needs "a base of individuals with a desire to assist in creating, identifying opportunities and partnering with other organizations to bring this important public education piece to the community. In an email to QSanAntonio, Smith wrote, "Robert is committed to social justice and economic equality in the LGBTQ community. It is based on this commitment that he was awarded the 2012 Rodric E. Fitzgerald Memorial Award by the LGBT Chamber of Commerce for his service and volunteerism."
