Comedian Vickie Shaw to headline Stonewall fundraiser
QSanAntonio, August 28, 2014

Texas-born comedian Vickie Shaw will bring her act to San Antonio on September 20 to headline the Stonewall Democrats of San Antonio's annual awards presentation and fundraiser at the Esperanza Peace and Justice Center.

Shaw, who hails from Beaumont, is known for her comedy riffs which focus on the trials and tribulations of being a woman, a mother and gay in America. Her three children and her "husbian" and life partner, known affectionately as Sgt. Patch, provide much of Shaw's source material. She often jokes that she is a recovering SOB (Southern Baptist).

On her website, Shaw proudly proclaims, "Vickie's family is important to her, and as you will see they are just as dysfunctional as your family. She includes them in her act because it is cheaper than therapy."

In 2006, Shaw was one of the women featured in the documentary "Laughing Matters . . . More!" that featured the routine of four lesbian stand-up comics with personal interviews. She has appeared in four comedy specials on LOGO TV and is a familiar face on the stage of Olivia Cruises. Last year she toured the US with her "La-la-pa-Lesbo Tour" and this year with her new "Sick and Wrong Tour."

This year's comedy fundraiser is a first for Stonewall, which in previous years held a banquet to present its annual awards for Political Advocacy, Community Leadership and Volunteer Appreciation.

Stonewall co-chair Elena Guajardo told QSanAntonio that the comedy show format provides a new twist for their annual fundraiser and a more casual atmosphere for the awards presentation.

"We thought we would try something different this year. The lower price point makes it affordable for more people to attend."

Guajardo also shared the list of this year's awardees. The Political Advocacy Award will be presented to state Senator Leticia Van De Putte; the Community Leadership will be presented to Graciela Sanchez of the Esperanza Center; and the Volunteer Appreciation Award will be presented to author and political activist David Plylar.

"This will be a casual evening," says Guajardo. "We invite the community to come out and enjoy the show. Vicki's comedy will appeal to everyone straight or gay, so bring your friends and allies. It'll be a great night to support the cause of equality."
