AIDS Awareness Week set for December
QSanAntonio, November 9, 2013
The San Antonio AIDS Foundation is spearheading an effort to shed more
light on the impact that HIV and AIDS have on the community by organizing
a seven-day observance dubbed AIDS Awareness Week.
Every year, World AIDS Day is observed internationally on December 1.
Using that day as the anchor point, AIDS Awareness Week organizers are
encouraging community groups, schools, treatment centers and others to
hold events during the week of December 1 through 7.
Regina Villalobos, the marketing director for SAAF says,
"Through AIDS Awareness Week groups and agencies are allowed the
flexibility to present more projects and events during the week rather
than have them limited to just World AIDS Day. SAAF invites community
groups to submit their events so they can be listed on the Awareness Week
“We initiated AIDS Awareness Week to extend service to the community,”
says SAAF’s executive director, David Ewell. “By virtue of
our name the public, understandably, assumes we know about all related
AIDS-related events in the city, but we simply don’t. So we've developed
a website where groups can list their Awareness Week events so the community
can know what’s happening in our area."

The San Antonio World AIDS Day observance will be held this year on December
1 at the Woodlawn Theater, 1920 Fredericksberg Road. The evening begins
at 6 p.m. with a social, followed at 7 p.m. with a program presentation
and ends at 8 p.m. with recessional of light.
On December 2, SAAF invites the public to join in a celebration of life
and remembrance of those lost to AIDS. The gathering begins at 11:30 a.m.
at SAAF House, 818 Grayson Street. There will be an opportunity to share
the names of loved ones with the ceremony ending in a release of balloons.
